Sweet Mocha Magazine was designed to celebrate the citizens of Monroe, La., from a non-political stand point. However, this is not the average political stand point....this is History. Our goal is to continue to celebrate the true average people, struggling to achieve their hopes and dreams but this political story effect us all and it would be an injustice not to declare our stand point before a national tragedy occurs.


It has been eleven days since the nation elected it's first "African American" President. For the past eleven days I have been observing my fellow citizens and the rest of the nation for their reactions. Of course African Americans are excited and very proud since this is the first African American President. But for African Americans it's not about his race it's about finally being represented in a more positive light. It removes the stigma that blacks are worthless and uneducated. As for White America the situation is somewhat more difficult. Over 63% of White America voted for President-Elect Obama but it's the 37% that concerns me. Although, this is a small number it's a number that can be quite lethal. Lethal for President-Elect Obama and his family, these people do not want to see change and our history is riddled with pain against anyone that tried to elevate blacks in our society. I have found several articles that state "Obama faces more personal threats than other Presidents-Elect." The Secret Service also has cautioned the public not to assume that any threats against Obama are due to racism. Come on! We must do better than this! I wish to God that race did not play a factor with a plot to assassinate this man; but we all know better. I hate being cynical but history has shown, documented, etc.,etc., that our society is still plagued by individuals that refuse to have a Black being their Commander and Chief. What I want to express to these very individuals is that America is in serious trouble and we have been for decades. Now we are at the state of do or die...is it more important that we halt our growth to become a better country because of the color of this man's skin? Would you risk the future of your children to terrorists like the ones from 911....instead of causing mass destruction this time.... they will cause total destruction. Each time I pull that lever to vote it's not about race it's about protecting the future of this country for my children and grand children. Why die for something you believe in and rise to see the devil's face. We are facing the greatest challenges of our lifetime. Our children, husbands, and wives are dying in record numbers in a war against our true enemies. Would you rather deal with them than a mere black man? Families are losing their homes and life savings along with the unemployment rate steadily climbing, but you are more concerned with the color of a man's skin? This country may have been founded (stolen) by Whites but it was built by the blood, sweat, and tears of people of color including hispanics; but especially blacks. We are all God's children and we are citizens of this Great Nation. No one is better than the next and these beliefs have scarred us for far too long. Any man that brings the Majority of his nation together is not some mere man he is a gift from God. RESPECT THAT! We have been blessed with a great leader and motivator for change. Please, give him a chance to enrich all of our lives financially and spiritually. It's sad that he had to deliver his speech surrounded by bullet proof screens to his left and his right side; because we are still a nation plagued by prejudice, ignorance and hate. We still have people that resist the change this country needs. This is a good man that wants to help heal the wounds we all carry from slavery to 911, the wounds that enlarge as each soldier returns in flag draped coffins or crippled mentally or physically. He's not going to do it all in one term. We must give him the chance! We finally have a President that can identify with all of us and not be blind to any of our causes. He was brought up by good white people that showed him how to embrace all races. As for me and my family we congratulate President-Elect Obama and we will with the rest of the nation keep him in our prayers. May God bless the ones that dream of the day of having his blood on their hands because you will never have seen sorrow of this magnitude for his death, there will be no hiding because there will no peace and no stone will be left unturned for retribution. Your action will cause a great reaction not from your fellow Americans, this great man has brought hope to all corners of the earth and each corner will seek to destroy America, none of us will be safe too live in this country we all call home. GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Saturday, September 27, 2008 Family and Friends gathered at Smith Funeral Home to say their goodbyes to Leslie Williams, Sr.. Deacon Leslie, passed this life on Saturday, September 20, 2008 with his devoted wife Sister Berdia Kennon Williams by his side.

OBITUARY

Bro. Leslie Williams was born on October 11, 1944 in Mangham, Louisiana. He was the fourth child born to the late Leslie Williams, Sr. and Evenlyn (Grant) Williams. As a young man he united with the Pilgrim Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. H. Franklin. He moved to Monroe, LA., and became a member of the New Light Baptist Church until he later joined Mt. Horeb Free Will Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Thomas B. White where he remained until his death.

The angel of silence ended his life on Saturday, September 20, 2008. He leaves to cherish his memories: his very devoted wife, Mrs. Berdia Kennon Williams, a loving mother, Evelyn (Grant) Williams, one son, Leslie Williams III, one daughter, Lamia Roshunda Hayes (Nathan) both of Monroe, La., three step daughters: Yolanda Hardwell (Leslie), Lakendra Kennon both of Monroe, La., and Monique Kennon of Shreveport, La., one step-son Robert Kennon, whom proceeded him in death.

Featured Artist - Edwin Lester

Edwin Lester is a self taught artist from Philadelphia who has taken the art world by storm. His spiritual concept is unique and Edwin Lester's art work will convey a message that is evident in every stroke. Edwin doesn't necessarily consider himself a spiritual concept artist, he has stated that he likes to paint images which are a part of his everyday life. God, love, simply living trying to be the best he can at what ever he is trying to accomplish that day. Lester is a man that loves what he does and can simply reflect on the joy of life. On August 30, 2008, The Richwood Citizens Advisory Board is sponsoring it's First Annual Car Show & Fun Day. The festivities will be held at the Richwood Park beginning at 8:OO AM. Cars will be judged in (3) Categories: Old School, Flavor/Flavor and Antique.

Male Enhancement?

Male Enhancement? What is really going on? I am so tired of these male enhancement commercials featuring "Smilin Bob" or the idiots from "Extenze" on my television. As a matter of fact I grew so tired of seeing them on regular, cable, or satellite stations that I began watching Disney Channel with my grand children. GUESS WHAT! They are advertising on Disney!! This is ridiculous and I am fed up with it. What happen to the days of letting nature take its course. Those things are not meant to work forever. Therefore, if you are an elderly man....you have seen the best of your days....LET IT GO!, it may give you the needed results, but who wants to look at the rest of your wrinkle behind. If you are a young or a middle age man wanting to extend your love making time, LET IT GO!, once we have ours, yours doesn't matter anymore. As a matter of fact it never did, it's really all about going through the motion and for these companies and the twisted network executives,"SHAME ON YOU!!!." Simply put...this is a private matter between you and your Doctor. And also, Ladies we are tired of your yeast infections, birth control and monthly problems these are also private matters and should be discussed between you and your Doctors. Thanks!!!

Maintaining A Healthy Relationship - July 2008

Maintaining a healthy relationship in a hostile environment (haters) proves difficult for many couples. However, it is not impossible when the couple truly love and respect one another. Infidelity is at the highest rate ever and yes your relationship will fall victim to it; but it's what you mean to one another that will get you through the storms of infidelity. I've noticed that many people do not like to see couples happy because they themselves are not happy; especially women. I myself have been guilty of this. It's like they say Misery loves company. However we as women must understand that we must be worthy of a healthy relationship ourselves. Yes, I said worthy! How can we form a healthy relationship if it was built from us taking our man from another woman? Isn't this sending him mixed signals? Shouldn't we expect that he would do it to us as well? He does. A relationship is not something that you play games with. Also, you cannot expect a good man to have you on his side if you have been with numerous men. First of all it's not healthy, secondly trust must be there and you having been with every Tom, Dick and Harry isn't a good recommendation for the job.

Relationships are just like 9-5 jobs and if you are not qualified you need not apply. Also, we as women cannot change what men have been doing as far back as the Bible days. Yes, we must expect fidelity from our men because in this day and time we are faced with diseases that a shot will not cure. But this is the variable...how.? I have watched and studied relationships between my grandparents and parents, etc., there is no easy answer, if there is any. The one thing that was made clear, each of them made commitments and they stayed true to those commitments. Men cheating does not reflect upon us as women and we should not let these situations validate who we are. I once believed that once a man cheated that he did not respect me nor loved me, but it was only after my last relationship ended due to infidelity that I sat back and took a long look at myself. Like me, many of us only add to the problems by trying too keep our men in line concerning other women. This is a battle we cannot win. We should trust that by being good women and respectable human beings that one day infidelity will come to pass and in order for this to happen, it must begin with us. We must stop these desperate attempts in hooking up with other women's men, you know trying to prove that we are the better woman for him, etc. If men did not have sideline hoes as they call us, then what other recourse would they have. Leave the job to the real prostitutes and that's if they still exist because sidelines are so easily available and don't require actual dollars, just a cheap meal, booze and motel and sometimes a handout on a bill. It's time we wake up and jump out this pretty woman existence and realize that when we began valuing ourselves and not sleeping with other women's men that men themselves will have no recourse other than to be faithful men, but until then "Let Go and Let God."

When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir. Now in 2008, what Malcolm X and Dr. King believed and spoke of still holds true. We have come very far as a race yet in many ways we are still slaves. This country is still reaping from our sweat and blood without the effort of physical slavery because we are containing ourselves. This is why no nationality treat us with respect because from watching us themselves and listening to the views such as Dee Lee CFP. When I received the email that's circulating throughout the Internet it hurt and angered me at the same time. However, I had to ask myself if they are wrong? I had to admit that she did her homework about most of us, but not all us. We see everyday in our community: Ignorance, Greed, and Selfishness.

Is Ignorance our primary weapon of containment? I wonder what great man said that "The best way to hide something from Black People is to put in a book?" They believe that few of us read consistently, if any.
Is Greed another powerful weapon of containment? Apparently the word consumer was created just for us because we are primarily considered a "consumer people", they believe we function totally by greed and I quote "They continually want more, with little thought for saving or investing." Would we rather buy some new sneaker than invest in starting a business? Jay Z, P Diddy, Oprah, Lil Wayne and many others of the accomplished blacks would beg to differ. As a matter of fact....they don't beg for anything. But to play down their accomplishments as well as others they call them fools....because no matter how much money they make they feel that this is still not "status"; because the vast majority of our people are still in poverty. This is where the Selfishness as they see it, falls into place since it has been ingrained in our minds since slavery and they feel is the major way they can continue to contain us. One of our own, Dubois said that there was a innate division in our culture. A "Talented Tenth" he called it. They feel he was correct in his deduction that there are segments of our culture that has achieved some "form" of success. Dee Lee wrote that "The Talented Tenth" missed the fullness of his work because they didn't read/comprehend that they where responsible to aid The non-talented ninety percent in a better life. She named the Talented Tenth the "Buppie Class"(black yuppies) - ones that look down on their own people or aids them in a condescending manner.

In 2008 that holds true in every nationality/culture, not only in the black culture. I don't see them aiding what they call "white trash," their own people that rank higher than blacks in illiteracy. As a matter of fact blacks with all of their social ills has embraced and welcomed white trash into our neighborhoods and families. Black people have sustained throughout history as strong people regardless of what has been done to us, because we are GOD's people. No we are not perfect but as with any other race in any other country "we all have bad seeds."

Roe-City Dance Competition for kids was created by Paedams in 2007 just so kids could show off their dance skills and be seen around the world. Although, actual prizes are not rewarded the kid's performances will be seen through our website and the You Tube Community. Monroe is full of good people but one stands out in being the First Person of the Month for Sweet Mocha Video Magazine and he's Mr. Willis Wooten, a local businessman (DIXIELAND AUTO BODY) located on 2665 Hwy 15, Monroe,La. Mr. Willis, is a compassionate, friendly person as well as a honest businessman. When you meet him it's as if you have known him all your life. HE DID IT!!! A local fisherman Mr. Eric Carter did what most first time fisherman find difficult. He landed a big one. Mr. Carter caught a 13 inch-5lb big mouth bass in a local area pond.
